Zero Waste Trekking: Hiking Rinjani Without Leaving a Trace

Since the implementation of the Zero Waste Trekking policy by Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) in 2025, waste management in trekking activities has become a serious concern. However, for us at Sajang Rinjani, this philosophy is nothing new.

Carrying the vision and mission of “Care to the Nature & Respect to Local Culture,” we have long made environmental sustainability and cultural preservation the core of every travel experience — especially in Mount Rinjani trekking.

Eco-Friendly Trekking Starts with Thoughtful Planning

One of the biggest challenges in trekking is logistics waste, especially from packaged food and disposable gear. To address this, we’ve taken concrete steps such as:

  • Repackaging logistics: We reduce single-use plastic by repacking food and supplies into reusable containers, used by both porters and guests.
  • Carry-in, carry-out waste system: All trash generated during the trek must be brought back down — no exceptions.
  • Environmental awareness briefing: Before the trek begins, every participant receives a detailed orientation about the Leave No Trace principles and the importance of protecting Rinjani’s delicate ecosystem.

Beyond Nature — Respecting Local Culture

Zero waste is not only about physical trash, but also about respecting the cultural landscape and way of life. Through this approach, we encourage travelers to:

  • Minimize excessive consumption and appreciate what is locally available.
  • Support local products, such as vegetables, fruits, coffee, and food sourced directly from villages around Rinjani — reducing the carbon footprint from transporting outside goods.
  • Engage respectfully with the local community, including participating in traditional customs like “Menyembek”, a sacred blessing ceremony before entering the mountain.

Be Part of the Solution

We believe trekking should not leave behind destruction, but rather create positive impact.
That’s why we continue to innovate — from plastic-free cooking kits, the use of non-disposable eating utensils, to developing an organic waste composting program at our basecamp.

We also collaborate closely with local communities and porters to ensure the zero waste principle is more than a slogan — it’s a way of life integrated into our tourism ecosystem.

Together, Let’s Protect Rinjani

Zero Waste Trekking is not just a program — it’s a shared commitment.
As a hiker, you play an essential role in ensuring the beauty of Rinjani remains intact for generations to come.
